Momentum Movement: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Workshop

Posted 21st February 2016 by Josh Schouten

Yes there is more to the gym than just CrossFit and Met-con classes.

BJJ1How would you like to learn some self defence skills?  We train to be fit and strong, but when do you put your training to the test.

Why Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?

BJJ is bodyweight movements that require strength, mobility and coordination to master.  Learning how to fall, roll, and move with another random moving object is a very complex skill.  Forget lifting weights and doing burpees, martial arts requires a huge level of mental and physical stamina and strength.  There are so many benefits to be taken from learning a new and challenging our bodies to perform constantly varied movements to increase our overall human performance.

The main strength of BJJ is that a smaller more intelligent (more technical) person, can beat a larger opponent.  This works by understanding how body mechanics and leverage can be used to your advantage.  Quality BJJ techniques require the least energy possible to move large loads (your opponent) long distances, quickly.

BJJ look at techniques that deal with being punched, being held from behind and includes serious ground based conditioning.   Its worth noting that the “sport” BJJ is also great for self defence in the real world, but hopefully you will never need it.

BJJ is a ground based grappling art.  The main idea being to “submit” your opponent.  What does this mean you ask?  Well it means that the person in a better position, has to either get the other person in a lock, either leg or arm, or a choke hold.  This sounds intense, I know! but it’s actually pretty safe.  Most BJJ students have hurt themselves more outside of training with silly games such as football, or… walking in the street, then they have with BJJ.

Where:  Momentum Training of course (Arch 328 Stean Street Hackney, E84ED)

Introducing Lorenzo

Lorenzo Fraquelli –   I am a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and I teach at WaveBJJ (Formerly ChiswickBJJ) In Chiswick and Elephant and Castle (thats why the name change).  I looking forward to teaching a movement class at Momentum Training.

What to expect?

In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the warm up (as in Crossfit) is very important, it is far more than a quick jog.  We will jog, we will learn to perform forward rolls, backward rolls and then shrimping/snaking/hip escaping….. We will also introduce some locomotions movements such as the lizards, prisoner rolls and much much more. We will also be introducing students to self defence techniques and maybe even some take downs.

“Sport” Techniques and sparring.

This is where the fun begins, we will look at some ground techniques that can help in self defence and we will also get to learn to start sparring with each other.  Obviously, after one class this is challenging.  But I will have minions to help and guide you through it.  We will go over some basics that I have stolen from this link http://www.grapplearts.com/9-rules-for-bjj-self-defense/ We will do the arm lock.

Epilogue

So after the class I will answer your questions, and we can try and do some sparring to get you a real feel.  If you have any questions, this is the time to ask. OR!! In advance at [email protected]
